Gangfeng Wang; Clinician
Gangfeng Wang is mainland China's first freelance photographer.
After growing up in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution and graduating from high school in 1975, he worked as a farmer, musician, and factory worker. When his sister gave him his first camera in 1981, he decided to become a professional photographer..
Mr. Wang was a self taught photographer – teaching himself camera use, darkroom processes, and finishing prints.
From his 'Gang of One' studio in Shanghai, Mr. Wang focuses on life in the city and the surrounding countryside. He also travels throughout China to places inaccessible to the outside world. “I always wanted to be a photographer, to celebrate the extraordinary beauty of people in China.”
