Dr. James Koerschen, Clinician

Dr. James Koerschen, a native of Minnesota, serves as the Head of School at Concordia International School Shanghai (CISS), a position he assumed the summer of 2007.

Jim’s music career began when he started playing the French Horn in the fifth grade. Upon HS graduation, Jim attended Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, where he continued to study the horn and held the 1st chair horn position throughout his college career. Jim’s first teaching assignment found him in front of a high school band of 26, with no feeder system. Six years later, the band program had evolved into two bands with over 120 students involved from a student population of 600. He was given the Teacher of the Year Award during his time there.

Dr. Koerschen earned a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Wayne State University in Detroit. He went on to Austin, Texas as an Assistant Professor of Music at the (then) Concordia Junior College. During his time there she saw the junior college evolve into a university. While there, Jim taught music theory, orchestration, arrangement, music appreciation, piano counterpoint, and conducting. During his career he has been the musical director for over two dozen musicals, some his original works.

After 15 years with Concordia University, Austin, and earning a Ph.D. at the University of Texas in Austin, Jim took a position as chief student affairs officer and band director at his alma mater. After two years, he assumed the position of President of Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Before joining CISS, Dr. Koerschen served as executive director of enrollment services for Kettering University (formerly GMI)
