April 2010
Preschool -Ms. Elliott
Mrs. Bieniek’s and Mrs.
Ullmann’s classes created colorful placemats by combining blown ink designs
with a frame made of prints using a wide variety of vegetables. Happy
eating!
Preschool-Mrs. Zielke
Ms. Mellen and Ms. Kipp’s classes are studying creation. We talked about all
the things that God has created. Then we worked on making each part of the
creation. We combined all the pieces; mountains, seas, birds, fish, leaves,
and land animals to make a creation mural. You can see the mural hanging
outside their classroom.
Kindergarten -Ms. Elliott
Mrs. Carreon’s, Mrs.
Nurre’s and Mr. Graham’s classes continued their study of Australian art by
learning about the Aboriginal story of the Rainbow Serpent. They created
long colorful paintings of snakes to express their ideas of this ancient
folktale.
Each child has also worked on creating an expressive self-portrait by
discussing, observing, touching and finally drawing their unique features.
Kindergarten-Mrs.
Zielke
Ms. Brainard and Ms. Rodriguez’s classes just finished up their artistic
studies on Latin America and are now looking at Africa. We are starting with
the animals and landscapes and moving our way into traditional African art.
Creating dyed fabrics, masks, lucky charms, and talking drums all from
different tribes around Africa.
Grade 1-Mrs. Zielke
Grade 1 students are focusing on
the element of design, Color. Students used the three primary colors (red,
blue, and yellow) to mix the three secondary colors (Orange, Purple, and
Green). Then they painted a color wheel flower using these colors.
Next they focused on the
Complementary colors and used dyed rice to make designs using the
complementary colors. We will be taking a short break from the colors to dig
our hands into some clay. The students will be making some Christmas
ornaments in the new clay studio.
Grade 2 -Ms. Elliott
Grade 2 classes have had a fascinating look at the famous jungle paintings
by the 19th century French artist, Henri Rousseau. Their lively discussions
of his artworks inspired large chalk pastel jungle drawings as well as
several large group paper sculptures of jungles.
Following this they worked on creating colorful covers for their art
portfolios by transforming each letter of their name into something that
describes their many interests.
Grades 3 and 4 -Ms.
Elliott
Ms. Underwood’s, Mrs. Burns’, Mr. Semler’s, Mr. Murphey’s and Mrs. Kent’s
classes have recently completed origami books using foam prints of designs
based on careful drawings from a variety of fresh flowers. Each book
highlights the ingenuity of each artist as they carefully thought about the
layout and content of each page.
They have also worked on chalk pastel drawings by carefully extending the
colors, textures and shapes of a small magazine image of a landscape glued
to a piece of paper. This project proposed a further challenge as they
needed to use their imagination to invent the rest of the picture. Each
class rose to the challenge and created some wonderful drawings!
Grades 3 and 4 -Mrs. Zielke
Ms. Weesner, Ms.
Longstaff, Mr. Gerlach, Mrs. Carroll, and Ms. Mullen’s classes have been
hard at work creating close up flowers like Georgia O’Keeffe. You can see
them on display throughout the Elementary school. Now it is on to “Starry
Night” and Vincent Van Gogh. Students are learning how to marbleize paper
with shaving cream foam and dabbling in the processes of printmaking.
